Zambia Supports the Geological and Minerals Development Bill 2024

The Zambian Government, through the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, along with the Zambia Chamber of Mines, has expressed its support for the Geological and Minerals Development Bill 2024. This announcement follows a high-level stakeholder engagement meeting held last week.

The event, organized under the Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF), brought together representatives from various sectors, including the Chamber of Mines, the Mine Suppliers Association, civil society organizations, chambers of commerce, multilateral organizations, the diplomatic community, and policy think tanks to review and discuss the Bill.

Both the Ministry and the Chamber confirmed that the Bill, which is crucial for the development of Zambia’s mining sector, will move forward in the legislative process, pending key amendments agreed upon during the discussions.

The Government reiterated its commitment to inclusive engagement, ensuring that all stakeholders have a significant role in policy formulation.

Dr. Hapenga Monty Kabeta, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, praised the collaborative effort, stating, “This process demonstrates the Government’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment that promotes economic transformation, job creation, and improved livelihoods.” He also commended the active involvement of stakeholders.

Zambia Chamber of Mines President Dr. Godwin Mooba Beene, representing the mining sector, emphasized the importance of the PPDF framework in facilitating transparent discussions. He remarked, “Today’s meeting is a testament to the value of open dialogue. This collaboration will help stabilize the mining industry and enhance its attractiveness for investment.”

Both parties underscored the necessity of ongoing engagement within the PPDF framework, believing it will contribute to a favorable environment for growth and investment in Zambia’s mining sector.

The event was attended by various influential stakeholders, including Dr. Sydney Mwamba, Executive Director of PMRC, highlighting the importance of multi-stakeholder participation in shaping Zambia’s economic future.
