ZEMA Approves $627 Million in Development Projects to Boost Sustainable Growth Across Zambia

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has approved 115 new development projects worth a combined $627 million, following the 33rd Environmental Assessment Committee (EAC) meeting held in June 2025.

The projects span a wide range of strategic sectors vital to Zambia’s long-term economic transformation, including:

  • Mining (51 projects)
  • Mineral processing (22)
  • Infrastructure development (18)
  • Manufacturing and processing (17)
  • Agriculture, forestry, and tourism (7)

These approvals reflect Zambia’s continued commitment to inclusive, environmentally responsible development.

Key Highlights

Among the standout projects is the construction of a ZAMMSA Regional Medical Warehouse in Kabwe, a facility expected to significantly strengthen medical logistics and healthcare service delivery across Central Province.

Another major approval includes the K739 million upgrade of Mansa Airport in Luapula Province. This infrastructure boost aims to improve regional air transport services, enhance trade connectivity, and stimulate local economic activity.

Sustainability at the Core

ZEMA emphasized that all approved projects will be subject to ongoing environmental compliance monitoring, ensuring they meet national environmental standards and sustainability goals.

“ZEMA remains steadfast in delivering its mandate to promote sustainable development through prudent environmental management and protection,” said Mrs. Ruth Kanyanga Kamwi, Manager – Corporate Affairs.

The agency underscored that its regulatory authority is guided by the Environmental Management Act No. 12 of 2011, which serves as the cornerstone for assessing, approving, and monitoring development projects in Zambia.

As the country accelerates efforts toward economic diversification, ZEMA’s approval of these projects represents a critical balance between growth and environmental stewardship.
