Kansanshi Mining Plc Commissions K1.7 Million Solar Power System at Kwambula Training Institute

SOLWEZI, Zambia – Kansanshi Mining Plc, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals (FQM), has commissioned a cutting-edge 120 kWh solar power system at Kwambula Trades Training Institute—an investment valued at K1.7 million. The installation is designed to provide a stable, sustainable energy supply for the institute and the Solwezi Trades Training Institute’s administration block, effectively eliminating reliance on diesel generators amid Zambia’s ongoing power supply challenges.

Representing Kansanshi’s General Manager at the commissioning ceremony, Training Manager Charlie Watt reaffirmed the company’s deep commitment to advancing education and vocational training in the Solwezi region.

“This project reflects our broader vision to equip local institutions with the infrastructure they need to support quality education, even in the face of energy insecurity,” Watt said.

Strategic Investment in Skills and Infrastructure

Beyond the solar project, Kansanshi is making substantial investments—over K12 million—to upgrade infrastructure and expand vocational training capacity. These include:

  • A new rigging workshop valued at K4.5 million
  • A new auto-electrical training program with K1.2 million in funding

These initiatives are designed to enhance skills development, improve employability among local youth, and support the region’s growing demand for qualified tradespeople.

Community Leaders Applaud the Initiative

North-Western Province Permanent Secretary, Col. (Rtd) Wishikoti Katambi, commended the solar installation for ensuring uninterrupted learning while easing pressure on the national electricity grid managed by ZESCO.

“This initiative not only strengthens the education sector but also contributes to national energy resilience, especially as Kansanshi continues to import power from the SADC region to support national demand,” he said.

Solwezi District Commissioner Tredson Mulofwa praised Kansanshi for championing gender inclusivity by actively encouraging the enrollment of more women in technical and traditionally male-dominated courses.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Webby Makoloni encouraged students to leverage the opportunities created by Kansanshi’s investments and strive toward securing meaningful employment.

Powering Education, Empowering Communities

The commissioning of the solar power system marks a significant milestone in Kansanshi’s ongoing strategy to foster resilient and self-sufficient communities. Through sustainable infrastructure and targeted skills development, the company continues to demonstrate its commitment to long-term socio-economic growth in Zambia’s North-Western Province.
