DRC’s Diamond Production Rises 27% in Early 2024, Boosted by Artisanal Mining

Diamond production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains largely artisanal, as shown by recent provisional data from the Ministry of Mines’ Technical Unit for Coordination and Mining Planning (CTCPM).

In the first half of 2024, artisanal miners produced 3,319,025 carats, making up nearly 68% of the nation’s total diamond output. Kasaï-Oriental province continued to lead in artisanal production, contributing nearly 99% of this sector’s output.

Industrial mining also experienced notable growth, producing 1,544,190 carats, while semi-industrial mining added a modest 1,433 carats.

Altogether, diamond production across all sectors reached 4,864,648 carats in early 2024, reflecting a 27% increase from the same period in 2023.
