First Quantum Minerals (FQM) is nearing completion of its US$1.25 billion Kansanshi S3 Expansion Project in Solwezi, Zambia, now 92% finished and on track for commissioning in August 2025.
Announced three years ago, the S3 project marks a bold investment in one of Zambia’s largest copper operations. It also complements FQM’s additional US$100 million commitment to the Enterprise Nickel Project in Kalumbila—underscoring the company’s long-term confidence in Zambia as an investment destination.
“This transformative upgrade is on schedule and will significantly boost Kansanshi’s production capacity,” said Ryan Ellis, Corporate Affairs Superintendent at Kansanshi Mining PLC. “It reflects FQM’s vision of strengthening Zambia’s role as a global copper powerhouse.”
Kelvin Chitambo, Optimisation Manager, added that the project incorporates advanced technologies to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and ensure long-term sustainability. “This sets a new benchmark for mining across the region,” he said.
Once operational, the S3 Expansion is expected to increase copper output, create jobs, enhance infrastructure, and grow government revenue—further supporting Zambia’s role in the global energy transition, where copper remains critical.
As FQM moves toward commissioning, the S3 project stands as a milestone of innovation, resilience, and strategic partnership in African mining.
