The Kansanshi copper and gold mine, located just outside Solwezi in Zambia’s North-Western Province, is rapidly approaching a major milestone. The S3 Expansion Project—a multi-billion-dollar upgrade designed to supercharge output—is now 80% complete, according to Assistant General Manager Axel Kotten.
Once finished, the expansion will mark a major leap in Zambia’s copper production capacity, strengthening the country’s position as a top-tier global copper producer.
Government Signals Full Support
Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, recently toured the site, praising the project’s progress and reaffirming government backing for the mining sector.
“This expansion aligns perfectly with our national vision to grow mining revenues and increase job creation,” said Kabuswe.
A Boost for Jobs and Local Businesses
The economic impact of the expansion is already visible. Over 900 direct jobs have been created so far, along with 300 indirect employment opportunities. Stafford Mulusa, Member of Parliament for Solwezi Central, noted the inclusion of over 140 local contractors, highlighting the project’s commitment to empowering community-based enterprises.
Full Operations Expected by Year-End 2025
With construction on track, the expanded Kansanshi Mine is expected to be fully operational by late 2025. Once online, it will not only ramp up copper production and export earnings, but also inject new momentum into Zambia’s mining-driven economic strategy.
As the global demand for copper continues to rise—driven by electric vehicles, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects—Kansanshi’s upgrade places Zambia at the forefront of the next wave of resource-driven development.
