Kansanshi Mining PLC has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to health and safety by earning second place in the 2025 Zambia Chamber of Mines Inter-Company First Aid Competition, held at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.
Hosted by Mopani Copper Mines under the theme “First Aid in a Digital World,” the national competition attracted 21 companies from across Zambia’s mining sector, each showcasing advanced life-saving skills and innovative safety practices.
Despite fielding a completely new team—as per competition rules requiring the rotation of defending champions—Kansanshi Mining achieved an impressive 85% score, just behind Lumwana Mine, which claimed first place with 89%.
Teza Kasengele, Safety Manager at Kansanshi Mining, applauded the team’s outstanding performance.
“Coming second with a brand-new team reflects the strength of our internal safety training programs,” Kasengele said. “With only two experienced members and four newcomers, our team still outperformed several well-established competitors.”
Kasengele emphasized that Kansanshi’s commitment to first aid goes far beyond the competition setting.
“First aid is embedded in our daily operations. It’s about empowering every employee to respond swiftly and effectively in emergencies—because first aid saves lives,” he noted. “This result is encouraging, but we’re not stopping here. We aim to train even more first-aiders across our operations and go for gold next year.”
The competition was officially opened by Paul Kabuswe, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, who called on mining companies to embrace digital technologies to enhance safety training.
“Mining houses must integrate digital tools into workplace safety. From mobile apps to real-time simulations, technology can revolutionize first aid response and equip workers with critical life-saving skills,” the minister said.
Anthony Malenga, President of the Zambia Chamber of Mines, echoed the call for innovation, highlighting the potential of immersive and interactive platforms to raise the standard of first aid preparedness across the industry.
