New Backhoe Loader Targets Productivity Gains in Zambia’s Mining and Construction Sectors

As infrastructure development and mining activity continue to expand across Zambia, equipment suppliers are introducing more advanced, versatile machinery to meet the demands of both large-scale and contractor-driven operations. Among these is the HB640 backhoe loader series from Hyundai Construction Equipment, available in the region through HPE Africa.

Part of a broader portfolio that includes wheel loaders, excavators and motor graders, the HB640 series is engineered to deliver high productivity, durability and operator comfort across mining support services, construction projects, agriculture and utility applications.

According to HPE Africa Managing Director Ross Collard, the machine is designed with the operational realities of southern Africa in mind. “This robust unit offers enhanced productivity, versatility and ease of use, while maintaining low maintenance requirements—key factors for operators working in demanding environments,” he explains.

Built for demanding conditions

Zambia’s mining sector—particularly in regions such as the Copperbelt and North-Western Province—requires equipment capable of performing reliably under tough site conditions. The HB640 meets these demands through a combination of durable mechanical systems and advanced operator support features.

The machine is powered by fuel-efficient engines from Kirloskar, paired with a robust driveline that includes transmission and axles from Carraro. Hydraulic performance is supported by components from Casappa and Walvoil, ensuring consistent power delivery and reliability in both loading and excavation tasks.

Designed for efficiency and operator comfort

A modern cabin design enhances both safety and productivity. With ROPS/FOPS certification, wide curved glass for improved visibility and ergonomically positioned controls, the HB640 reduces operator fatigue during long shifts—an important consideration for mining and construction sites operating on extended schedules.

Integrated LED lighting and a fully adjustable seat further contribute to a safer and more efficient working environment.

Strong hydraulic capability

Hydraulic performance is a key strength of the HB640, delivering 145 litres per minute at 2,200 rpm and operating at a relief pressure of 230 bar. Selectable Power and Eco modes allow operators to balance performance and fuel efficiency depending on the task.

Optional telescopic dipper arms extend digging depth to 5.93 metres, while breakout forces of 6,320 kgf on the bucket and 3,580 kgf on the dipper provide the strength needed for demanding earthmoving and trenching applications.

Versatility across applications

The loader’s parallel-lift linkage ensures precise control and consistent bucket positioning, which is particularly useful for material handling tasks in mining support operations. Standard bucket capacities are 1.26 m³ for the loader and 0.22 m³ for the backhoe, with a range of optional attachments available.

Quick hitch systems allow for rapid switching between tools such as buckets, breakers and forks—enhancing productivity on multi-task job sites. Selectable four-wheel drive and optional Ride Control further improve mobility and stability on uneven terrain, reducing material spillage and wear on components.

Maintenance and local support

Ease of maintenance is another priority, with features such as a tilt-up engine hood, ground-level service access points and simplified cooling systems designed to reduce downtime. These attributes are particularly valuable in remote mining areas where maintenance efficiency is critical.

HPE Africa supports customers across the region with technical advisory services, repairs and maintenance, helping operators maximise equipment uptime and extend service life.

Supporting Zambia’s growth

As Zambia continues to invest in mining expansion, infrastructure and regional trade corridors, machines like the HB640 backhoe loader offer a flexible and cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications.

With its combination of durability, performance and operator-focused design, the HB640 is well positioned to support the evolving needs of Zambia’s mining and construction industries—delivering productivity and long-term value on site.
