Zambia is reaffirming its commitment to accelerating the development of the Mingomba Copper Mine as technology-driven exploration company KoBold Metals advances plans to develop the high-grade copper deposit into a major mining operation.
During discussions with KoBold Metals executives, Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane highlighted the government’s intention to support strategic mining investments that can increase copper production, attract foreign investment and contribute to the country’s economic development.
Located in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, the Mingomba project has attracted international attention for its significant high-grade copper resources. KoBold Metals, a California-based mineral exploration company backed by investors including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, is applying artificial intelligence (AI), advanced data analytics and geological modelling to improve mineral discovery and exploration.
The project is considered an important part of Zambia’s ambition to significantly increase national copper production over the coming decade. Once developed, the mine is expected to create employment, strengthen local supply chains, generate export revenue and support the country’s position in the global copper market.
Musokotwane emphasised the importance of maintaining a predictable investment environment and ensuring that major mining developments progress efficiently from exploration to production. He noted that projects such as Mingomba will be important in meeting Zambia’s long-term economic objectives, particularly as demand for copper continues to grow alongside renewable energy development, electric vehicle production and infrastructure expansion.
KoBold Metals has continued to invest in exploration and resource evaluation at Mingomba, with drilling programmes identifying a substantial high-grade copper deposit. The company sees the project as having the potential to become one of Zambia’s most significant copper developments in recent years.
Government support for Mingomba also reflects Zambia’s broader strategy to attract investment into the mining sector while increasing local economic participation. Authorities are placing greater emphasis on ensuring that new mining projects deliver wider benefits through job creation, skills development, infrastructure investment and opportunities for local suppliers.
As development plans advance, the Mingomba Copper Mine is expected to contribute to Zambia’s ambitious copper production targets and strengthen its role in global critical minerals supply chains.
The project also highlights the growing application of artificial intelligence in mineral exploration. By combining advanced technology with geological expertise, KoBold Metals aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of mineral discovery, reduce exploration risks and accelerate the development of new mining opportunities.
