The Democratic Republic of Congo has launched a judicial investigation into Congo Dongfang Mining (CDM) after a rupture in the company’s retention basin released a significant volume of wastewater into several districts of Lubumbashi.
According to a statement issued on November 21, 2025, by Minister of State and Minister of Justice Guillaume Ngefa, the spill flooded roads, homes, rivers, and the Moïse market, exposing residents to serious health hazards and causing widespread environmental damage.
The Minister instructed the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation to immediately initiate legal proceedings to identify those responsible and pursue appropriate actions in accordance with the law. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmental protection and public safety, emphasizing that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure accountability and uphold justice.
