Mimosa Resources and Mkushi Traditional Leaders Inspired by FQM’s Sustainable Mining Practices
Mimosa Resources, in collaboration with the traditional leadership of Chief Chitina’s chiefdom in Mkushi, has commended First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) commitment to sustainable mining practices following an eye-opening tour of the Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, North-Western Province.
The visit was part of Mimosa Resources’ stakeholder engagement strategy aimed at fostering collaboration among traditional leaders, mining operators, and local communities in support of the Kashime Copper Project in Mkushi. The tour highlighted the potential of a balanced approach to mining—merging economic growth with environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
Showcasing Sustainable Mining
The delegation witnessed firsthand how Kansanshi Mine integrates responsible resource extraction with environmental stewardship and community development. FQM’s practices demonstrated the feasibility of large-scale copper mining coexisting with conservation efforts, such as advanced water recycling systems and a 4,000-hectare game sanctuary around the mine.
Dr. Ian Nzali Banda, Stakeholder Engagement Manager at Mimosa Resources, stressed the importance of responsible mining during the visit.
“As a Zambian-owned company, Mimosa Resources, in partnership with FQM, is committed to developing the Kashime Copper Project with a clear focus on responsible mining. FQM’s innovative environmental management systems and dedication to community engagement exemplify how mining and environmental protection can harmoniously coexist,” said Dr. Banda.
He also praised Chief Chitina and his council for their collaborative approach, underscoring the importance of inclusive dialogue in fostering sustainable development.
“The insights from Chief Chitina and his team were invaluable. Their engagement reinforced the need for transparent and collaborative processes as we work toward socio-economic growth through responsible mining,” he added.
Addressing Community Concerns
FQM’s Agriculture and Wildlife Coordinator, Dr. Jackson Katampi, addressed environmental concerns raised by Mkushi leaders.
“The community’s apprehensions are valid. However, through initiatives like rigorous air and water quality monitoring, advanced water recycling systems, and biodiversity conservation, we’ve shown that mining can coexist with environmental preservation,” explained Dr. Katampi.
He added that FQM’s efforts not only ensure environmental sustainability but also enhance investor confidence, positioning their model as a benchmark for mining in Zambia.
A Vision for Mkushi
Chief Chitina expressed optimism after the tour, noting the positive impact of sustainable mining practices.
“FQM’s initiatives in tree planting, water recycling, and wildlife conservation are proof that mining and nature can coexist. Seeing how mining has transformed Solwezi has inspired us to envision similar development in Mkushi, which currently relies on agriculture,” said Chief Chitina.

Lloyd Nyirenda, President of the Mining, Mineral Traders, and Processing Association of Zambia, applauded Mimosa Resources and FQM for their leadership in sustainable mining.
“This visit has been an eye-opener. It confirms that sustainable mining is achievable. FQM’s practices are not only benefiting the environment but also creating value for local communities,” he emphasized.
