Normet expands its scaling offering with the new compact Scamec LC 065 A

Normet has launched the Scamec LC 065 A, a purpose-built scaling machine designed to deliver exceptional safety, visibility and productivity for underground operations — including the narrow, high-activity workings typical of many mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Built on the same proven and robust carrier platform as other Scamec models, the LC 065 A features the most compact boom in the Scamec range, optimised for 4 x 4 m to 6 x 6 m tunnels. This makes it particularly suited to DRC copper and cobalt operations, where confined headings and complex underground layouts demand highly manoeuvrable equipment. With an optional narrower dozer plate and a shorter end module, agility can be further enhanced, allowing smoother movement in tight mining areas.

Designed with safety as the first priority

Scaling remains one of the most hazardous underground mining activities, especially in deep and mechanising mines across the DRC. To reduce these risks, the Scamec LC 065 A integrates multiple protective safety features. The enclosed FOPS and ROPS-certified cabin includes a 22 mm multilayer windscreen with a protective grill and offers low noise levels to improve operator comfort in demanding environments.

Optional camera systems enhance situational awareness, while an optional dust suppression system helps maintain visibility and air quality — a critical consideration in DRC underground operations where ventilation constraints are common. An optional emergency escape function enables rapid evacuation, and a fire suppression system further strengthens operational safety. The articulated boom is shielded with rock cover that directs falling material away from the cabin, significantly reducing operator exposure.

Focus on operator wellbeing and efficiency

Operator ergonomics and productivity are central to the Scamec LC 065 A’s design. The adjustable operator seat features ergonomic armrests, while breaker operation via foot pedal allows operators to focus fully on precise boom control. The cabin can be lifted by 750 mm and tilted by 25 degrees, improving visibility and ergonomics during roof scaling — particularly valuable in uneven DRC ore bodies.

Three-point contact rails, non-slip steps and puddle lights support safe entry and exit, even during night shifts or in wet conditions. Normet’s in-house-developed control system provides intuitive operation, data logging, diagnostics and process monitoring through a touch display, supporting consistent performance and improved shift management.

The launch of the Scamec LC 065 A underlines Normet’s commitment to delivering safe, reliable and efficient underground solutions that align with the evolving needs of DRC mining operations, while prioritising operator safety and sustainable productivity.
