FQM Boosts Zambian Mining Expansion with Groundbreaking Copperbelt Geological Survey

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – Recognizing the untapped potential of the Copperbelt Province, First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has officially handed over a groundbreaking aerial geological survey to the Zambian government.

Fully funded by FQM, this comprehensive survey addresses a long-standing gap in geological data, despite more than a century of mining activity in the region. The newly acquired airborne geophysical data, now available through the Geological Survey Department, marks a crucial first step in driving further exploration and investment in Zambia’s mining sector.

The survey was officially presented to Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Mineral Development during a ceremony attended by His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema. Speaking at the event, President Hichilema emphasized the importance of understanding mineral resources for effective management and development.

“It’s a serious indictment on us as a country. One cannot exploit or manage resources they do not fully understand,” President Hichilema stated. “Even if we know the Copperbelt is rich in minerals, where exactly are they? How deep do they go? And how do we structure projects around them? This has been a long-standing challenge that we are now addressing.”

FQM Chief Executive Officer Tristan Pascall reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s mining ambitions. He highlighted that the survey aligns with Zambia’s goal of increasing copper production to 3 million tonnes per year and strengthening its position as a global leader in copper mining.

“Exploration is the key to achieving this vision,” Pascall said. “We made a promise to help Zambia on this journey, and today, we are delivering on that commitment.”

Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe confirmed that the survey was completed on schedule under a memorandum of understanding between FQM and the government. He further noted that consultations are underway to determine if additional areas in the Copperbelt require further geological mapping.

FQM Exploration Manager Jon Stacey explained that the data will be made available to mining rights holders to support future exploration efforts.

“There was a clear need to generate new regional data to assist with exploration, particularly in support of the government’s 3 million tonnes strategy,” Stacey said. “The Copperbelt was the logical focus area for maximum impact.”

Beyond the geological survey, FQM continues to invest in Zambia’s development through initiatives in infrastructure, renewable energy, and community programs. These efforts reflect the company’s long-term commitment to fostering economic growth and ensuring that mining benefits are widely shared across the country.

With this latest geological survey, FQM is helping to lay the foundation for a thriving and sustainable mining industry, further propelling Zambia towards its ambitious copper production goals.
