CAMI Grants Seven Digital Research Certificates to Kobold Metals in the DRC

The Mining Cadastre (CAMI) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially issued seven digital research certificates to U.S.-based Kobold Metals, marking an important step in strengthening mining collaboration between the two countries.

The certificates were formally presented on September 2, 2025, at a ceremony in Kinshasa, attended by Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba and senior sector stakeholders.

Driving Digital Transformation in Mining

The move underscores the DRC’s commitment to modernizing its mining sector through digitalization and improved governance. Kobold Metals, recognized globally for its use of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced exploration technology, has pledged to contribute to the digitization of national geological data in partnership with the National Geological Survey and CAMI.

This effort is expected to enhance data transparency, attract further investment, and streamline mineral exploration in one of the world’s most resource-rich regions.

Focus on Lithium and Beyond

A major focus of Kobold’s investment is the Manono hard rock lithium project in Tanganyika province, considered a key asset in positioning the DRC as a central player in the global energy transition. The company has already invested tens of millions of dollars, including payment of mining title fees, to advance its exploration and development activities.

Commitment to Local Development

Speaking at the ceremony, Benjamin Katabuka, Managing Director of Kobold Metals in the DRC, emphasized the company’s dedication to socio-economic impact. Planned initiatives include:

  • Expanding employment opportunities for the Congolese workforce.
  • Providing structured training and fair remuneration packages.
  • Developing infrastructure to enhance living conditions in host communities.

Katabuka stressed that these efforts reflect Kobold’s long-term commitment to responsible investment in the DRC.

Government’s Vision for Responsible Growth

In his address, Minister Louis Watum Kabamba reaffirmed the government’s determination, under President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, to build a mining sector that is innovative, responsible, and wealth-generating, underpinned by strong governance and community benefit.

Strengthening U.S.-DRC Mining Ties

This latest development consolidates Kobold Metals’ position as a leading U.S. investor in the DRC mining industry, while reinforcing the country’s push for sustainable growth and deeper international partnerships in strategic minerals.

With lithium, cobalt, and other critical minerals in high global demand, the DRC’s collaboration with technologically advanced players like Kobold Metals signals a forward-looking model for mining development in Africa.
