The Zambian Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has introduced the Zambia Integrated Mining Information System (ZIMIS), a state-of-the-art digital platform aimed at enhancing efficiency and transparency in the management of mining licenses.
ZIMIS replaces the previous Cadastre System, offering a more streamlined approach to issuing mining rights. This upgrade aligns with Zambia’s goal of ramping up copper production to 3.1 million tons annually by 2031.
As part of ongoing compliance efforts, the system also facilitates the repossession of over 1,000 non-compliant licenses in 2024, which will be reassigned in 2025 to promote further exploration and development.
The launch of ZIMIS follows a remarkable 79% surge in mining licenses issued in 2024 compared to the previous year, signaling strong growth in the sector.
