IRH Drives Sustainable Transformation at Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia

IRH Leads Sustainable Transformation at Zambia’s Mopani Copper Mines

International Resources Holding RSC Ltd. (IRH), a subsidiary of 2PointZero, has released updates on the ongoing transformation at Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia.

After acquiring Mopani in early 2024, IRH is focused on making it the most productive copper mine in the Copperbelt region, driven by technological advancement, sustainability, and collaboration with the workforce.

Modernizing Mopani Copper Mines

IRH’s acquisition reflects its commitment to modernize and decarbonize the Mopani operation, with an ambitious goal of boosting copper production to 200,000 tonnes annually within the next three years.

This initiative aligns with Zambia’s national goal of producing 3 million tonnes of copper by 2030, an objective set forth by President Hakainde Hichilema to expand the mining sector and attract international investment.

Creating the “Mine of the Future”

At the heart of IRH’s mission is the digital transformation of Mopani, aimed at streamlining processes and increasing productivity. Through its “Mine of the Future” initiative, IRH has introduced advanced technologies that digitally integrate employees and equipment, forming a “Mine-to-Market” digital twin. Key elements of this program include:

  • Advanced process control and drone-based monitoring
  • Real-time locating systems (RTLS) and fleet management for optimized tracking
  • AI-driven predictive maintenance to minimize downtime
  • Five centralized control rooms to enhance monitoring and oversight

Safety improvements have also been prioritized, with real-time location tracking, 3D visualization, emergency response support, and proximity awareness initiatives making significant contributions to a safer work environment.

To enable these advancements, IRH has expanded Mopani’s underground network by more than 50 kilometers, providing over 300 Mbps bandwidth for seamless data exchange among 10,000 workers and thousands of machines, which enhances transparency, efficiency, and safety.

Boosting the Local Economy and Supporting Community Growth

Since the acquisition, IRH has expanded Mopani’s workforce from 5,975 to 6,565 employees, with 99% of positions held by Zambian nationals.

This increase in employment supports local economic growth, fueling community development and contributing to increased consumer spending.

Leadership Perspectives

H.E. Mariam Almheiri, Group CEO of 2PointZero, commented, “In our pursuit of sustainable mining at Mopani Copper Mines, we are committed not only to responsible resource management but also to innovative solutions that align with global sustainability trends. We aim to create value for local communities, promote job creation, and demonstrate our dedication to social and environmental stewardship.”

IRH CEO Ali AlRashdi added, “We are pleased with Mopani’s progress and are committed to making it one of the world’s most productive and environmentally responsible copper operations. Our strategic initiatives are increasing output while reducing environmental impact through advanced technology like AI-powered systems and real-time monitoring.”
